One of the biggest horse racing events in the United States, the Kentucky Derby will commence on September 5, 2020. While more than 300 thoroughbreds were nominated for the 2020 Kentucky Derby, only 18 in the US will actually get a starting position for the race. The first is the Kentucky Derby Prep Season with 20 races. The races leading up to the 146th Kentucky Derby were well underway before the Coronavirus pandemic led to the postponement of the race. Points available for the races range from 1-100, depending on the quality of the race and where the horse finishes.

What does that mean for the prep races? Upcoming Stakes Race: As noted above, the Jerome Stakes Jan. 1 is the first Kentucky Derby prep race of the new year. Since the date is postponed, bettors now have the luxury of time to come up with their deserving bets for the upcoming Derby.

Beginning with the Iroquois Stakes in mid-September and running through the Southwest Stakes in late-February, each race offers a 10-4-2-1 points split.
